Day 1: Lusaka - Lion Camp

On arrival in Lusaka you will be ushered to your light aircraft to catch a flight to Mfuwe, the gateway to the South Luangwa National Park. The flight is approximately an hour and you will feel the excitement set in as before your eyes as the urban jungle of the capital city is transformed into a vast, African wilderness. Upon landing, you will be met by your safari guide and transferred by open game viewer to Lion Camp.

Day 5: Depart for Anabezi

After five unforgettable nights in the Luangwa Valley it’s time to say goodbye to the team at Lion Camp. You will be transferred in a light aircraft to your next destination, the Lower Zambezi Valley. This is an incredibly scenic flight as your pilot takes you over the escarpment and winds down into this magnificent valley. Upon landing, you will be met by your safari guide and transferred by open game viewer to Anabezi.

Day 9: Anabezi - Lusaka

After breakfast and an optional short activity, you will be transferred to Kulefu airstrip where you will catch a flight from there to Lusaka or to your next safari destination.

The Lower Zambezi National Park

The Lower Zambezi valley arguably offers the most varied safari experience in Zambia. Visitors to any of the stunning camps in and outside the National Park can choose from game drives, bush walks, canoe safaris, boat cruises or tiger fishing as a means to experience this wilderness. The interaction of the wildlife and the river is extensive and as you progress deeper into the year, so the game congregates along or near the available water.

The Lower Zambezi offers an extensive population of elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard with the large herbivores being present in excellent numbers and occupying the river bank and islands with monotony. The lion numbers are stable and Lower Zambezi has a great leopard population aided by the abundance of prey, large trees and conservation protection.

Highlights from this 8 night safari include:

Day 1: Vic Falls - Bumbusi Wilderness Camp

Your journey starts off in Victoria Falls where you will hop onboard a 20 minutes charter flight to Robins Airstrip in Hwange National Park. A Member of the Bumbusi team will be waiting to meet you, after which you will be transferred in the open game drive vehicle to Bumbusi Wilderness Camp.

The drive is approximately 45 minutes.

Day 5: Bumbusi Wilderness Camp - Vic Falls Airport

On day 5, you will depart Bumbusi Wilderness Camp for Robins airstrip where you will catch a charter flight to Victoria Falls airport.

Day 5: Vic Falls Airport - Mpala Jena Camp

You will take a short road transfer from Victoria Falls airport to the harbour on the Zambezi River for a boat transfer to Mpala Jena Camp.

The total travel time from Robins Airstrip to Mpala Jena is 01h30min.

Day 7: Mpala Jena - Vic Falls Airport

On your last day you will be transferred from Mpala Jena to Vic Falls for your onward journey

Hwange National Park is situated in western Zimbabwe and is the country’s premier game reserve. With easy road and flight access from both Victoria Falls and Bulawayo, the reserve is extremely popular with both local and international tourists. Hwange is renowned for its huge elephant and buffalo herds, sable and other rare antelope as well as an excellent concentration of large predators including lion, leopard, wild dog, hyena, and cheetah. Birders will find plenty to keep them busy with over 400 species of birds recorded and the park is especially known for its spectacular sunsets.

At almost three million acres, Hwange is a huge wilderness area open to Botswana on its western side, allowing wildlife to traverse across countries and making it extremely valuable for the conservation of large mammals like elephant, lion, and buffalo.

Zambezi National Park lies on the southern banks of the Zambezi River, west of the tourist center of Victoria Falls. At over 100,00 acres, the reserve is part of a huge conservation area that extends westward across Botswana and beyond to Zambia, Namibia, and Angola. The area is dominated by beautiful teak and mopane woodlands and wildlife abounds. Elephants, buffalo, hippos, and crocodiles are common, and lion, leopard, and wild dog can also be found. The birding is exceptional with species like the shy African finfoot being fairly common along the quiet river banks.

There are plenty of ways to experience this wildlife haven, from walks to game drives to enjoying a sundowner cruise down the Zambezi River.

In season, there are a handful of superb colonies of carmine bee-eaters that provide birders and photographers with hours of entertainment. Wildlife lovers know the value of any wild dog sighting. The space and abundant prey species mean that the Luangwa valley is probably the best place to see wild dog in Zambia.

Day 1: Arrival

Your safari can begin by road or air charter from either Lusaka OR Livingstone driving into the Kafue.

Day 1 - 4: Plains Camp

Assuming you depart from Livingstone, your first 3 nights will be at Nanzhila Plains in the Southern part of the park.

Day 4 - 7: Lake Camp

After 3 nights at Plains Camp, you will be transferred to Nanzhila Lake Camp on the shoreline of Lake Itezhi-tezhi for a 3 night stay at the secluded Lake Camp.

Day 7 - 10: Kaingu Safari Lodge

Your final 3 nights are on the Kafue River at Kaingu Safari Lodge enjoying the river based canoeing and game viewing on offer.

Day 10: Departure

On your final day, you will be transferred back to Lusaka in time for your departure flight.

Please note – this entire itinerary can be done in reverse order.

About the Kafue National Park

The Kafue National Park was established by the legendary Norman Carr in the 1950s and is Zambia’s oldest and largest national park. Covering a massive 22,400 km2 (8,650 mi2), the park is dominated by Miombo woodlands and interspersed with seasonal floodplains, rivers, and dambos – the dry riverbeds that provide seasonal refuge for the wide variety of wildlife. In fact, Kafue boasts more species than any other park south of the Congo.

Wildlife sightings can be very good with large herds of lechwe and buffalo in the floodplains, alongside all the predators of which lions are very well represented. There is also excellent birdlife.

This package begins in Livingstone with a 3 hour road transfer to Dundumwezi Gate where you will be met by the Nanzhila Plains safari team who will drive you into camp.

Day 4: Plains Camp - Lake Camp

After 3 nights at Plains Camp, the Nanzhila team will drive guests to Lake Camp. Drive time approximately 2 – 2.5 hrs.

Day 4 - 7: Lake Camp

After 3 nights at Lake Camp, guests will be transferred to Lusaka. Drive time approximately 4 – 4.5 hrs.
